Introduction
The third quarter of 2026 has revealed a Scottish market that is increasingly selective, but far from stagnant.
Over the past three months, conversations with Chairs, CEOs, investors and senior leaders have shared a common theme: growth remains firmly on the agenda, but organisations are becoming far more deliberate about how they achieve it.
Across private equity-backed businesses, founder-led companies and established organisations, leadership quality has emerged as one of the most important drivers of value creation.
This quarter has also brought evidence that capital continues to flow into Scotland. Strategic acquisitions remain active, growth funding is being deployed and businesses continue to invest in leadership capability, technology and governance.
The market has not become more optimistic. It has become more disciplined.
Selective Confidence Is Replacing Caution
Throughout the first half of the year, many organisations focused on preserving flexibility through interim, contract and fractional leadership solutions.
While those solutions remain important, a noticeable shift has emerged throughout Q3.
Businesses are beginning to make longer-term decisions around leadership, growth and organisational capability.
A strong example came from Quorum Cyber, which appointed a new CEO to support its next phase of international expansion, demonstrating continued investment in senior leadership despite ongoing market uncertainty.
Across the market, Boards appear increasingly willing to invest when they can clearly identify the return.
The conversation is becoming less about cost control and more about value creation.
The most successful organisations are asking:
“What capability do we need to achieve the next stage of growth?”
rather than
“Can we afford to hire?”
Scotland Continues to Attract Investment
One of the clearest signals during the quarter has been the continued flow of capital into Scottish businesses.
In July, Archangels reported supporting £17.9 million of investment into Scottish scale-up businesses during the first half of 2026, including significant backing for life sciences and technology businesses such as Biocaptiva and Bioliberty.
September also saw Bathgate-based technology business CSignum complete an oversubscribed £2.6 million funding round supported by Archangels, PXN Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, the British Business Bank and US investors. The business simultaneously appointed John Nicholls as CEO as it enters its next phase of commercial growth.
Meanwhile, Glasgow-based digital chemistry company Chemify secured £22 million of public investment towards an £89.9 million expansion programme that is expected to create up to 300 highly skilled jobs in Scotland.
Alongside these developments, the Scottish National Investment Bank announced a number of significant investments during the quarter, including support for DataVita’s £300 million data-centre programme and investment activity involving biotechnology business Mironid. The message is clear.
Capital remains available for businesses with compelling growth stories, scalable operating models and leadership teams capable of executing ambitious plans.
Leadership Has Become a Strategic Asset
Across private equity-backed and growth-focused businesses, leadership capability is increasingly being assessed alongside financial performance.
The strongest executive teams consistently demonstrate:
- Commercial curiosity
- Strategic judgement
- Change leadership
- Strong stakeholder management
- The ability to simplify complexity
Investors, Boards and CEOs are placing greater emphasis on leaders who can navigate uncertainty while continuing to deliver growth. The premium is no longer solely on experience – It is on impact.
Finance Leaders Who Understand “The Why”
One conversation with a CFO recently captured an issue that continues to surface across the market. Many finance teams remain excellent at reporting what has happened. Fewer excel at explaining why it happened.
Today’s finance leaders are expected to do much more than produce accurate numbers. They must provide insight.
Increasingly, Boards want finance professionals who can:
- Translate data into strategy
- Identify risks early
- Challenge assumptions
- Influence executive decision making
- Drive organisational performance
This is one of the reasons demand for high-calibre FP&A professionals continues to grow.
Businesses are seeking leaders who operate comfortably between finance, strategy and operations, helping organisations make better decisions rather than simply better reports.
M&A Activity Continues to Reward Strong Leadership
Strategic acquisitions have remained a feature of the Scottish market throughout Q3.
A notable example was the acquisition of MacKay Corporate Insurance Brokers by Brown & Brown Europe, representing the group’s first Scottish acquisition and strengthening its presence across Glasgow, Ayr and Aberdeen. The transaction retained the existing leadership team, reinforcing the growing importance of leadership continuity within acquisition strategies.
This reflects a broader trend visible across the market.
Whether investment arrives through private equity, growth capital or strategic acquisition, investors increasingly focus on leadership capability alongside financial metrics.
Many of the conversations I have had with investors this quarter have centred around three questions:
- Can the leadership team scale the business?
- Can the organisation execute transformation successfully?
- Is the Board equipped to support future growth?
The answers to those questions increasingly determine where capital is deployed.
Governance and Board Effectiveness Remain Under the Spotlight
Another theme emerging throughout the quarter has been the growing focus on governance.
Multiple board and trustee appointments have been announced across Scotland’s enterprise, innovation and public sector organisations, reflecting broader recognition that governance plays a critical role in organisational success.
The most effective Boards create:
- Clarity
- Accountability
- Challenge
- Strategic focus
The least effective create administration.
As markets become more complex, Board effectiveness is becoming a genuine source of competitive advantage.

Looking Ahead

- Continued investment into high-growth Scottish businesses
- Ongoing private equity activity focused on value creation
- Demand for CFOs and finance leaders with transformation and M&A expertise
- Greater emphasis on Board effectiveness and succession planning
- Increased focus on leadership impact over leadership tenure
The market is not rewarding growth at any cost.
It is rewarding disciplined execution, strategic leadership and organisations that understand where they create value.
