Marketing Agency specialist Sarah Montgomery-Chatham reflects on her role in Iconic Resourcing and gives an overview of recruiting in the marketing market, specifically in agency!
I am lucky to be a marketing recruiter that has actually worked in marketing, prior to joining Iconic Resourcing I started in in-house marketing, where I learned the importance of brand consistency and aligning with company goals. Moving to a small agency, I had to be agile, handling tasks like designing stands, interviewing executives, SEO, paid ads, and social media. Then when working in sales roles, this enabled me to move into a more people centric role and apply my marketing knowledge directly. This combination of experiences is what really sets me apart as a recruiter.
My approach to both marketing and sales has always centered around understanding the people involved. The best way to appeal to someone is to understand what they are really interested in. My work in SaaS sales focused on understanding the challenges my clients faced, helping then understand the software and ensuring they knew how to get the most out of it in both time and value. This customer-centric mindset drives value and connection in my work.
One of things that is so important in recruitment is to fully understand the not only the people, but the role, experience and skills required for people to succeed. My career in marketing has taken me from the fast-paced world of a marketing agency, into software sales and now into recruiting for agencies. Each step has equipped me with skills and insights that give me a unique take on what I do.
I’ve worked with some amazing marketers and have really seen how their strengths differ from fully data-driven and analytical to a solely creative mindset. The importance of balancing being both strategic and hands-on is such an important one that is always required in different measures. Pairing this with really understanding what skills my client is looking for enables me to find the right fit for their team.
Anyone working in an agency will understand better than most the importance of collaboration skills. Every project is a group effort, with diverse input leading to the best outcomes. This has a massive effect on how the teams can be flexible on the ‘off the job spec’ traits they need.
Transitioning into recruitment, I’ve applied my marketing and sales skills to understand and meet the needs of both clients and candidates. Matching the right talent with the right roles stems from my marketing background—understanding people, roles and how to connect them effectively. My varied career gives me a unique skill set. The agility from agency work, deep brand focus from in-house roles and recruitment experience help me tackle marketing challenges effectively. At Iconic Resourcing, I bring a well-rounded perspective that drives success for every client.
